Overview

The Lowell Program in Economic Geology was endowed by a gift from J. David Lowell to the University of Arizona.

The Lowell Program in Economic Geology is a new post-graduate education and training program for geologists in the mineral industry. This professional Master's degree is designed to provide geologists with the technical and leadership skills required to meet the mineral industry's increasing demands around the globe. Therefore, the Master's program has an international orientation with distinctive course contents that cover the breadth of the mining business.

The Master's is designed for students following one of four career paths or emphasis areas. (1) Exploration geology, (2) Development geology, (3) Mining geology, and (4) Environmental geology. The international mining industry relies on contributions from these emphasis areas, which can subjectively be assigned to four broad subject areas: exploration and development; mining and processing; economics, business, and people; and health, environment, and safety. Semester-long courses, modules, short courses, as well as distance learning are drawn from these four subject areas. Regardless of the career path chosen by a student that has been admitted through the application process, we expect him or her to sample courses from at least three of the four subject areas. This flexible structure is intended to provide the student with a richer inter-disciplinary education, which we believe is essential to shaping a more successful professional.

The Lowell Program in Economic Geology is also committed to providing continuing education and training to members of industry who are not necessarily pursuing an official degree at the University of Arizona, by making modules and short courses available to non-degree-seeking geologists.

The Lowell Program in Economic Geology is situated in a cordilleran setting with varied geologic exposures. Its location in the midst of the famous Arizona porphyry copper province provides a wealth of opportunities to visit mineral deposits and active mines. Given its climate, this region is also ideal for the field-based courses of the Lowell Program.

The Department of Geosciences at the University of Arizona is a top-ranked institution with modern analytical facilities and approximately 25 faculty members, many of whom have longstanding ties to the mining industry and to Latin America.
